College Necessities
June 16, 2008 – 9:27 am by NickStudents usually make the mistake of bringing the wrong things to college. Many helpful items will save countless hours and make the experience of living away from home a lot easier. Overlooking many items will cost you time and money.

Buy a Laser Printer: Inkjet printers are the biggest scam ever! Parents should buy a laser printer for their college-bound child. Samsung manufactures a line of inexpensive monochrome printers, which print out thousands of pages before needing a refill. Pick the monochrome printer over the color printers because students will never be required to print anything in color. Multi-function printers are a waste because scanning and fax functions are rarely used. Insanely cheap, manual refills for the printer can also be bought on eBay. Also bring a stapler and hole-puncher.

Comfy Mattress Pad: The military coats they pass off as mattresses will inflict incredible back pain. A mattress pad will solve the problem.

Extra Bed Sheets: Bring three sets of XL-Twin sheets in any color except black and white.

Raise your Bed: Many websites sell bed raisers, which lift your bed to enable you to store a bunch of stuff under the bed.

4-month calendar: You can plan your whole semester and not be taken off guard by exams or assignments.

Tools:Hammer, Philips screwdriver, Flathead screwdriver, duct tape and pliers will help you overcome all the challenges: putting up hangers, assembling furniture, fixing your desktop, …

Flips Flops: Community bathrooms and showers are disgusting. Bring a pair of shower shoes and flip-flops to ensure you don’t walk barefoot and expose yourself to bacteria.

Ear plugs: The chances your roommate is a snorer is pretty high. Ear plugs will also come in handy during studying sessions.

A decent desk chair: You will be working endless hours at your desk. Some good back support will help in the long run.

Can opener/bottle opener

First Aid kit: I would also include vitamins, Tylenol, Flu pills, cold medicine, and pepto-bismol.

Small lock box and laptop lock: A great little measure to keep your laptop and important documents secure.

Backup tools: Bring an external hard drive and USB flash drive to college. You can load the external HD with media. Mac users can also use Time Machine. Keep all your important files on a USB flash drive or an iPod. You can also transfer data more easily and avoid burning CDs and DVDs.

Cordless Vacuum and Cleaning supplies: Mom and dad won’t be around to keep things tidy. The space constraint will also make it essential to keep things clean. Air fresheners can keep everything smelling peachy.

Microwave and Microfridge: some schools have banned these appliances. Some colleges provide community microwaves, which in handy for preparing quick meals.

Lamps: College dorms rooms are lit with soul-sucking fluorescent lights. A bed lamp and desk lamp will crate a cozy atmosphere and allow you to study while your roommate sleeps.

Storage: Hangers for clothes are necessary to store your clothes. Extra brown boxes or proper storage bins will come in handy. Cases must be stackable and portable.
Decorations and Power bars: The barren blocky walls will drive you crazy. Bring along a couple of posters and a mirror to remove the feeling your living in a prison. Power bars and adapters will help you plug in all your electronics.

I wish I would have had even half of these items when I went to college. Seriously, you need every one of these items listed.
